Haliplex creates paradigm shift in time to market for SONET/SDH MSPP products
Apr 6, 2009, 09:00

Melbourne, Australia - 6th April 2009 - Haliplex Pty Ltd, a leading developer of telecommunication solutions for Utilities' networks, today announced it will revolutionise the speed that Ethernet over SONET/SDH products can be brought to market.

CTO with SDP “Just as Rockwell fundamentally altered the voice band modem market with their voice band modem “data-pumps” in the 1980s, Haliplex will transform the optical market with the release of the SONET/SDH Data Pump (SDP) product line”, said Haliplex Chief Technology Officer, Anthony Merry.  “Initially offering customization and integration of the SDP onto 3rd party 'carrier cards' in 2009, Haliplex will be releasing a complete SDK and debug environment in 2010”, he said.

Intended as the core technology for 3rd party MSPP products, the SDP product line encompasses next generation Ethernet over SONET/SDH, RPR, and legacy PDH technologies. It allows key functionality to be componentized and reused by communication vendors both in pizza box and blade-based designs.  It can also be retrofitted to existing installed equipment.

This initiative also follows the high level componentization and reuse trend in chassis design being spear headed by the ATCA and Micro TCA initiatives. It is possible to combine the SDP with a carrier card suited for ATCA, Micro TCA or a number of other popular chassis. The flexibility of the design allows a third party to produce multiple card variants with different port counts while using the same plug on SDP. This allows vendors to exploit shorter time to market and maximizes inventory utilization.

The compact SDP design is a completely functional hardware and software solution on a PCB only 110mm X 150mm in size. Supporting STM-16/4/1 and the SONET equivalents, the first SDP to be released utilizes a PowerPC processor, Arrive Technologies' AT4848 Multi-service ADM and an FPGA for 3rd party customization and back plane access. The software solution, built on embedded LINUX, includes a completely functional and proven SONET/SDH application. The SDP can be managed by either SNMP or optionally via a Windows based EMS also provided by Haliplex.

Due to low power consumption, the Haliplex data-pump is also a recognized 'green' technology solution. In many cases older SONET/SDH/PDH cards can be replaced, and funded from the reduction in network power consumption. This makes it possible to extend current network lifetimes by 5 years or more.

“In the present economic down turn organizations tend to build out their existing networks which are predominantly SONET/SDH, in many cases postponing a complete network re-roll”, said Haliplex Chief Executive Officer, Richard Cookes. “Our new data-pump technology provides the ability for SONET/SDH vendors to extend the life of their installed product base by allowing the latest SONET/SDH capability to be quickly designed and retrofitted in a cost effective manner”,  continued Cookes. “In terms of time to market there is no faster, lower risk solution available today”, he said.

Haliplex will be manufacturing the SDP, as well as licensing it to third parties. Haliplex has signed a global communications vendor to utilize the SDP in its next generation products, and is currently in discussions with other interested parties.
